CASE STUDY 1 2004 New shell fit-out |
Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd was contacted by one of its regular customers to assist in securing a fit out contract for which it was bidding. A price had previously been submitted by the shell contractor which was well beyond the clients budget. The original mechanical services scheme proposed the installation of a low pressure hot water system to provide heating with ranges of ceiling void mounted type air conditioning units to provide comfort cooling. It had been hoped that the opening windows would provide sufficient natural ventilation but building regulations and traffic noise proved this to be unsatisfactory. Pyramid Environmental
Services Ltd attended meetings with the clients and liaised closely with
building control on the clients behalf to discuss the options and ascertain
the full requirements for the building before proposing a purpose built
solution comprising modulating indirect fired gas air handling units to
serve each of the two floors via ranges of supply air ductwork installed
above the false ceilings and terminating with ceiling mounted diffusers.
Further ranges of ductwork provided extraction via a central line of ceiling
mounted extract grilles connecting to axial flow fans within the plant
room. Within the plant room each AHU system was fitted with 3 circuit interlaced cooling coils and a purpose designed ductwork incorporating ranges of change over dampers which provided the client with a considerable energy saving over the initially proposed system by allowing the building to be cooled solely by the introduction of filtered outside air for a significant part of the operational period. A purpose design control system was installed which would operate the damper system to control the internal temperature of the building by mixing returned air and fresh outside air whilst ensuring the minimum fresh air requirement detailed in part L of the building regulations was always maintained. The three stages of dx cooling were only called in after the external air temperature was too high to cool the building. At this time the control system automatically reverted to the minimum fresh air mode. Cooling was provided by a range of six Daikin cooling only condensing units fitted with signal converters to enable them to operate in conjunction with the bespoke control system. The clients requirement for the system was to maintain a condition of 21°C + 2°C in practice it was found that the system maintained the design condition within 0.5°C at all times. Sundry server, board room and conference room areas were served by conventional heat pump and cooling-only split and multi-split units. |

CASE STUDY 2 2005 Childrens Play Area |
Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd was contacted by an architectural designer to assist in providing ventilation to a warehouse area which was being converted to a childrens play area and therefore needed to satisfy part L of the building regulations. As no gas was available on site, Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd proposed the installation of an oil fired Powrmatic ducted air system to accommodate the maximum expected occupancy of 250 people. As the building was some years old and under going a change of use a substantial insulation upgrade was requested by building control which would have made the project unviable. Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd liaised with the local authority on behalf of the client before proposing a scheme which satisfied building control requirements without the requirement to insulate the building. The system consisted of the design and installation of a special air handling unit using condensing technology and motorised change over dampers which allowed the building to be heated quickly when empty by re-circulating air within the building and only changing to fresh air when high occupancy and the resultant high heat gain occurred. Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd were also able to assist the client by structuring a contact which enabled the system as designed and installed to be lease therefore freeing up vital capital for use in other areas. |

CASE STUDY 3 2004 |
Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd was approached by one of its regular clients to carry out the design supply and installation of a cooling and ventilation system to serve a single floor of a square building with a central atrium for its clients new head office. The existing system had been partly removed and the fresh air supply system drawing air from roof level, originally incorporated as a feature during the building's construction, was damaged beyond repair and further use. There was no space around the building to allow condensing units to be installed externally. The client was under extreme pressure to occupy the building resulting in a total contract period on site of 5 weeks. In view of the foregoing Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd proposed the use of standard components where possible and selected 5 No Daikin 25KW ducted evaporators to be installed within the ceiling void. These units were connected to 5 insulated spirally wound header ducts which were installed to form a virtual loop around the perimeter of the building. Each header was fitted with 10 No adjustable diffusers. Fresh air was provided to each unit via a Daikin VAM heat recovery unit drawing and discharging air to and from outside atmosphere via special duct sections which passed through the original damaged system to terminate with ranges of grilles installed on the soffit features where they would not detract from the buildings appearance. A range of 5 No standard Daikin condensing units were purchased. These were modified and upgraded on site to allow discharge ductwork to be installed to the units. The buildings facia panels were removed from a bulkhead at roof level. The units were then craned to roof level before being 'posted' through the opening into a roof top void area where Pyramid Environmental Services Ltd had installed purpose made steelwork to support the units. 6 No 630mm dia discharge ducts from the units were then threaded through the existing steel roof trusses to discharge to atmosphere via a weatherproof louvre. Fresh air to the condensers was facilitated via a further louvre. Inter-connecting refrigerant lines and control cabling were installed to roof level on the faces of existing columns which were then fitted with false faces. The project was completed on time and within budget. |
